Importance of an open mind to new ideas

I was recently wondering. Which is one of the fundamentals to improve certain aspects of my life and I discovered that an open mind is the key to achieve it.

The importance of having an open mind to new ideas is essential to improve your results, all your results are directly related to the information and ideas you have learned. If you change the information you handle for new and updated ideas, your results will change.

Read on to discover how to identify when it’s time to open your mind and when it’s better to ignore some ideas.

Your results relate to the information you have learned. If you are not satisfied with your results, it is time to open your mind to new ideas. It means that your database is not correct or outdated to achieve what you want. A person does not earn minimum wage because he wants to earn minimum wage, he earns minimum wage because he does not know how to earn more.

Nowadays you have so much information that almost anything you want to do, someone has written about it or it is somewhere.

Unless you want to invent something totally new, but even if that is the case, you can work with existing ideas and innovate to create something unique. And the only way to take advantage of this is to have an open mind.

The goal of an open mind is to be able to gather new information without rejecting it the first time an idea or opportunity comes your way. For this you have to be aware of two things:

  • The information you have learned so far can and probably will no longer be useful in the modern world.
  • Recognize the fact that the information you need is available and only by being aware of this will you open your mind to listen and accept new ideas.
  • The information our parents and grandparents operated with is no longer accurate for use in the world we live in. This sentence explains it better than any other:

In a time of drastic change, it is the trainees who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists. Eric Hofer.

We live in a world of constant changes, so fast, that only those who are constantly studying and open to new ideas manage to take advantage of new opportunities and are the ones who earn the most money and live the best.

While those who stick with the ideas they learned as children and during their school years find themselves equipped with information that was useful at the time they learned it but is no longer useful today.

The most successful people of our times are constantly reading and learning, it is one of the main characteristics that all people who share success have in common.

While people, after graduating from university, think that their study time is over, they are the people who experience the greatest problems in achieving success.

And for those who think it doesn’t matter if they drop out of school, people like Microsoft founder Bill Gate who dropped out of college or Wendy’s founder Dave Tomas who dropped out of school and still managed to succeed. Do not be mistaken with these examples, although these characters left the traditional system of study, they are people who continue to study despite not going to a school or university.

This applies to all areas of life, financial, health, relationships and happiness. You have compiled during your first years of life information about all these areas of life and you use that information to develop today, however this information, although learned from parents and loved ones, does not mean that it is correct.

Now it is your responsibility to identify which areas you want to improve, see what you have learned from each of them and look for new information. And when I say that it’s not always important to have an open mind, it’s because you have to know who the information is coming from.

If you have an open mind to the information that your grandmother gives you, be careful because it may not be the correct information. You have to guard your mind from the ideas and opinions of others. Just stay, with an open mind to ideas or people who have achieved, what you want to achieve.

When you are born, your mind is open to new ideas, every idea that is presented to you is accepted, without being analyzed, because you have nothing to compare it with. After the first years of life, all that information becomes part of you and it is where all your points of view, opinions, religions, behaviors, etc. come from.

It is then your responsibility to change that information.

A few years ago I heard a story about a lady who cut off both ends of the ham before cooking it in the oven. One day her children asked her why she cuts the ends of the ham, she responded by saying that her grandmother does it that way. The curious children to discover why they do that, called the grandmother and asked her the same question, she replied that she cut the ends of the ham because the container where she prepared it was very small and if she did not remove the ends it would not fit in the container.

A simple story like this explains how behavior is inherited from generation to generation, thoughts from the past are transmitted to the present, despite the fact that today things do not have to be done the way they were done years ago. .

And only when someone questions how things are done, can they change and do them in a better way.

How to have an open mind?

Research first before rejecting new ideas

When you are presented with a new idea, it is normal to check it against your database and see if it matches what you know. If it doesn’t sound logical based on your previous experience, reject it. However, if you want to have an open mind, you can’t reject every idea that comes your way when it doesn’t match what you already know.

Research first before rejecting an idea, see what results it is giving to other people, if the results are positive, continue researching and see how you can use it in your life, experiment and see the results for yourself.

    Tolerance

Learn to be tolerant, new ideas and points of view are only accepted by tolerant people, it is a quality that you can develop and that is necessary to achieve an open mind.

    Accept the changes

Be aware that we live in a world of constant change, everything is constantly changing and evolving. Do not cling to doing things the way you have always done it, if you do things the same as ten years ago it is time to change, if you are not evolving it means that you are not opening your mind to new ideas.

    Constant Learning

The only way to keep your mind up to date with new information is to constantly study.

We know that a doctor who does not keep studying constantly, the information he learned a few years ago is obsolete and we will not place our health in the hands of someone who we know has not studied since he finished university.

But this does not only apply to medicine, no matter what area you work in, constant learning and the application of new ideas is the only thing that will keep you ahead and avoid living your life with outdated information.

You have to look for new ideas and for this you have to read, take courses, attend seminars, meet new people.

    question your results

Start questioning your results, this is related to never being satisfied, if you get to a point where you have a stable job that covers all your basic needs, don’t be tempted to settle. Question your situation, ask yourself what else I can achieve and how I can achieve it.

Conformist people generally have a closed mind, they are not interested in new ideas of how to improve, you have to awaken that curiosity with which you are born to know and look for new ways and ideas of doing things.

What’s the point of having an open mind?

Having an open mind will help you to continuously improve, it will help you to see new opportunities, many times you want to find opportunities, however even though you want to find an opportunity, the simple fact of not keeping an open mind means that you do not find it.

An open mind will help you to be the first in your work, if you are the first to adopt new technologies, if you constantly learn new ideas, if you put into practice new ways of doing things, you will have an advantage over everyone else.

An open mind will lead you to achieve the results you want. The ability to change the ways you do things and make adjustments until you find the desired result. For this you have to be flexible, adaptive and have an open mind.

    Don’t be afraid of failure

Being afraid of doing things wrong is a barrier that prevents you from progressing and improving. New ideas means doing things that you are not used to, every time you feel afraid to do something new, be aware that fear does not mean “don’t do it”, see it as a signal that tells you that it is something you have to do, to to learn.

This fear is seen a lot in older people and the use of new technologies, they do not use technology for fear of doing it wrong.

    Closed mind

Closed-minded people are people who stopped acquiring new knowledge. They are not constantly looking for new ideas and therefore are destined to fail.

The world changes so fast that someone who thinks the same way he did 50 years ago is not prepared to take advantage of the opportunities of the present.

Normally closed-minded people reject new information without analyzing it and are intolerant.

They don’t like change and are comfortable in their space and with what they have. Perhaps they are not completely satisfied with the results they have, but not wanting to look for new information, they always remain in the same status.

    Example of open minded people

There are thousands of examples in history of open-minded people, the world we live in is thanks to people who dared to do new and different things from what was known at the time.

Before it was thought that the earth was flat and whoever sailed beyond what could be seen was heading straight for death. If that idea was maintained in society, we would not know the world as we know it now. If it weren’t for a person with an open mind and no fear of failure, than he undertook an expedition and discovered the new world. Today everyone knows him as Christopher Columbus.

One of the most important things I’ve learned in life is to ignore most of what people say. I see what they do instead. Amanda Patterson – Writer.

The tree is known by its fruits, you have to see results, not what the person says, when you decide to open your mind to new ideas, see the fruit, not the tree, and that way you will know if you can listen to that idea or simply ignore it.
